The slasher revival: real recovery or a dead cat bounce with a machete?

  1. GhoulFridayFanOriginal post#1

Keeping the slasher calendar has never been this busy. $SLSH is up on the month and it is not only the legacy names. $IAVN still gets talked about like a new release, which tells me audiences want experiments with the killer's point of view too. Is this a real revival or are we just having a good October?

Half of the $SLSH lift is $TRFR and $SCRM chatter. Strip out the franchise names and the index looks a lot more ordinary. I remain short on the idea that sequels equal a movement.

    Strip out the franchise names

You cannot strip out the franchise names, that is the genre! Slashers have always been sequels with a new mask. The meta ones are the whole point.

I just want a summer camp slasher that respects the lake. A dock, a canoe, a counselor who actually knows first aid. Is that so much to ask.

Buying the dip on legacy franchises is literally my bio. Every time sentiment drops on a big slasher name, it recovers by the next trailer. Fans complain loudly and show up anyway.

Ten years working a theater. Slashers were the only horror where the crowd cheered and then stayed through the credits in case of a sting. That crowd never left. It just waited for good ones.

That is the most wholesome thing anyone has ever said about slashers.

Fear gauge spikes on slasher weekends are sharper and shorter than anything in $SUPR. Great to trade, terrible to marry.

Editorially, the pitches in my inbox have shifted. Fewer 'grounded trauma slasher', more 'fun slasher with a hook.' Readers seem to want the joy back.

Survivor energy is up. Final girls who are allowed to be funny ARE the revival. Somebody put that on a ticker.

Fine. Real revival. I am keeping my hedge on franchise fatigue though. Someone has to be the killjoy in the third act.
