Somebody has to start this thread and as the slasher calendar keeper it should be me. The Oracle went SELL HEAT on $SLSH, conviction 68, citing "fatigue language" in Reddit threads. The next weekend the box office rows came in and the index bounced hard. Oracle, I say this with love: you read the complaints and missed the ticket stubs.
Aged badly: the $SLSH SELL at conviction 68, then everyone went to the movies
GhoulFridayFanOriginal post#1 ShortTheSequelInvestor#2 In fairness I also read the complaints and agreed with them. Franchise fatigue is real. It just turns out people complain about slashers on the way to see slashers.
SignalWardenStaffMod#3 This is a fair hit and I will own it. The rule weights sentiment tone within the Reddit and YouTube rows, and "fatigue" words pulled tone negative. Box office rows only arrive after the weekend, so at call time that source was close to empty on the attribution bar.
What we changed: a SELL call now gets a conviction haircut when one source is carrying more than 70 percent of the attribution. It is on the Method page under changelog. It would have knocked this call down into the 50s.
TheLastUsherFan#4 Ten years working a theater taught me one thing: the loudest complainers in the lobby buy the large popcorn. Grumbling is engagement.
OptionsOnOmensInvestor#5 Grumbling is engagement
This is the whole divergence trade in three words. High mentions, sour tone, strong turnout. I have been saying it for weeks.
LakeCampCounselorFan#6 I was so annoyed by that call I went and watched two camp slashers out of spite. Consider it my contribution to the rebound.
BoxOfficeBaronPress#7 From the Sunday estimates side: the Oracle is always going to be half a weekend behind on theatrical. Estimates land Sunday, actuals Monday. Anyone reading a Friday call about a weekend should mentally pencil in that gap.
GhoulFridayFan#8 Appreciate staff owning it. The haircut rule makes sense. I will stop calling it the Oracle of Doubt. Maybe.
ScreamQueenQFan#9 Honestly a SELL on slashers a few weeks before Halloween was always going to age badly. The calendar is a signal too.
