Genre editor question that keeps coming up in our pitch meetings. $TLOU made horror adjacent TV feel like prestige drama: big production, awards talk, serious reviews. Great for the genre's reputation.
But does prestige make horror safer? Fewer monsters, more grief, more slow character episodes. Is that growth, or is horror being asked to dress up for a dinner party?
Growth. The episode people talked about most from the first season barely has any infected in it, and it made grown adults cry all over the internet. Horror was always about loss.
I think both. Prestige money buys craft, but it also buys caution. The weird edges get sanded off when a lot is on the line.
As a game player, what impressed me is that the show kept the silence. The game's best moments are quiet, listening for clicks in the dark. That translated.
