$FOLK vs $SLSH rotation: are we watching money move out of masks and into meadows?

  1. TickerTombstoneInvestorOriginal post#1

Charted the two lines on the Index page for the last six weeks. Every time $FOLK rises, $SLSH drifts down, and vice versa. Correlation is strongly negative. Is this a real rotation or am I charting my cat again?

  2. PaleDoormanFan#2

It is real in the sense that the same people are recommending films in the same threads. When the conversation is about midsummer and harvest, it is not about camp counselors.

Some of this is structural. Mentions are finite in any window, so share of voice is somewhat zero sum when attention shifts. The sub-indices are built on share and sentiment, so a rise in one pulls the others slightly. It is a rotation of attention, not proof that one audience is abandoning the other.

And the rotation will flip hard around Halloween. Slashers own the last two weeks of October every year.

Folk and slasher also overlap more than the tickers suggest. A killer in a small isolated town is both. Where do those land?

  6. SignalWardenStaffMod#7

Both, weighted by the classifier's confidence. Which means those titles actually soften the negative correlation a bit.

Long game: folk is catalog friendly. The classics keep getting rediscovered. Slashers spike on releases. Different kinds of money, same genre.

Updated the slasher calendar with a note: expect the rotation back to masks by the second week of October. Place your bets, but not with real money.
