A producer wants my haunting rewritten as folk horror. How do I keep the bones?

  1. LagosLanternLightCreatorOriginal post#1

A small producer liked my feature script, a haunting set in a city apartment, and asked if I would rewrite it as folk horror. Move it to a village, lean into ritual and the land. I grew up on these stories so I am not against it, but it feels like rewriting the bones. How do you take a genre shift note without losing the thing you wrote?

Folk horror first person here. The key question is: what does the community want? In folk horror the village is the antagonist or the accomplice. If your apartment story has neighbors, you may already have a village.

Take the note, but ask the producer what they love about the current draft. Write it down. That is the thing you protect through every pass.

Please do real research into any rituals you use, or invent your own with care. Nothing flattens folk horror faster than a ritual that feels copied from a moodboard.

This is where I feel strongest. I would rather build a ritual from my own family's stories than borrow something that is not mine.

Slate brain: producers asking for a genre shift often have a gap in their slate they want to fill. Not a bad thing, but it helps to know. Ask gently. Not advice, just how these conversations tend to go.

The best folk horror scripts I read have a calendar. A festival, a harvest, a date. Your apartment story probably has an anniversary in it somewhere. Turn it into the village's calendar.

From Oslo: the land has to feel older than the characters. Wide shots on the page. Write the weather like it has an opinion.

Update after a call with the producer: they love the grief at the center. So the grief stays, the neighbors become a village, the anniversary becomes a festival. Same story, different clothes. Thank you all.

That is the best possible outcome. Save me a seat at the first screening.

Lovely thread. Quiet reminder for anyone reading later: $FOLK moving on the board is not a reason to rewrite anything. This worked because the rewrite served the story.
