I edit trailers and features in Jakarta, and I want to talk about something CRYPT keeps showing on the International page: Indonesia sits near the top of the regional heat board almost every week, and it is not one film, it is a whole pipeline.
My theory is folklore. Pocong, kuntilanak, genderuwo, santet stories. Every grandmother has a version, so the audience walks in already scared. The films don't need to explain the monster, only to remind you. What do you all see from outside?
As a folk horror person this is my dream market. The rules are already known by the crowd, so the filmmaker can spend the runtime on dread instead of lore dumps.

What I love is how much of it is tied to real ritual texture: prayers, funerals, village customs. The good ones treat it with care, not as exotic decoration.
