Every time someone on the International page asks me about Spain, the answer starts with $RECF. The apartment building, the night vision, the stairwell. It changed how a whole generation here thought about budget and scale.
But I think the bigger change was confidence. After [REC], Spanish genre film felt like something we could export, not only something we imported. Agree? Disagree?
Found footage or bust, so I have to say it: $RECF has the best building in the genre. You learn the floor plan by fear.
As someone who shoots found footage, the lesson I took from [REC] is that the camera operator has to be a character with a reason to keep filming. A reporter and her cameraman, the perfect excuse.

Yes, and near the end the camera is also the light source. You cannot turn it off even if you want to. That is cruel design.
Spain has a strong gothic side too. Orphanages, old houses, sad ghosts that make you cry more than scream. I think of that as the quieter sister of the [REC] energy.
The Spanish ghost stories of the 2000s are some of the most emotional horror I know. Very different from us in the north, much warmer even when tragic.
Worth saying that an American remake of a European hit usually tells you more about the original's reputation than about the remake. $RECF is a good example of an original that kept its heat.
