How does the International page count coproductions? (plus Translations feedback)

  1. MadridMorgueFanOriginal post#1

Question for staff. I noticed a Spanish and French coproduction showing up in both the Spain and France rows on the International page. Is that double counting? My spreadsheet friends will be upset.

Hello, I am the upset spreadsheet friend. If the global total sums the rows, a title with three countries would be counted three times.

Good question, and it is by design. A coproduction counts fully in each region it belongs to, because a Spanish French film really is part of both conversations. The regional rows answer 'where is this title present', not 'what share of the pie'.

The global view does not sum those rows. It counts each title once. So the regions can add up to more than the total, and that is expected. We will add a small note on the page so nobody's pivot table gets hurt.

    It counts each title once

Pivot table unhurt. Thank you. Please do add the note, then I can stop emailing myself about it.

This matches how coproductions work in practice. Every partner country claims the film at home, and they should. Splitting it by percentage would hide exactly the international story the page is trying to show.

While staff is here: the Translations menu is lovely, Portuguese is my daily setting. Two small notes. Some genre words stay in English, like 'slasher', and honestly that is correct, we say slasher too. But the Oracle call badges sometimes wrap onto two lines on mobile in Portuguese, because our words are longer.

Confirming the mobile thing. Longer languages push the call badge onto a second line when I read on the train. Still readable, just less pretty.

Both notes logged. We keep genre terms like 'slasher' and 'found footage' where the community uses them as loanwords, and translate the rest. The badge wrap is a known layout issue for longer languages and is on the pre Halloween fix list.

Japanese setting also works well. I am very happy the ticker symbols stay the same in every language. $RING is $RING everywhere, that is good design.

Same for Korean. One wish: show the original title next to the translated one on the International page. Many films have a very different local name.

Original titles next to localized ones is a good idea and cheap to do. Adding it to the list.

Spanish reader here, and thank you for not translating the footer joke too literally. 'Ni tranquilidad' lands perfectly.
