Sentiment divergence: high mentions, low sentiment. Bullish, bearish, or just loud?

  1. OptionsOnOmensInvestorOriginal post#1

My favorite pattern on the Sentiment page: a ticker where mentions climb while sentiment sinks. $SCRM has been doing it all month. $TRFR too, on and off. Everyone is talking, not everyone is happy. What do we think this actually predicts?

For legacy slashers it predicts nothing except that the fandom is passionate. We complain because we care. Meta slashers especially invite argument by design.

What we can say from backtests: divergence on its own is a weak predictor. It gets more interesting when it persists across more than one source. If Reddit is sour and YouTube is sour and news tone is flat, that is different from Reddit alone being cranky. The Sentiment page lets you split by source, and I would always do that before reading anything into it.

From the effects side: low sentiment around the more extreme titles is often people saying "I cannot watch this" while absolutely watching it. The classifier might read that as negative.

This is a genuine limit. Horror praise often sounds like distress. We tuned the sentiment model on horror text for exactly this reason, but it still misreads some of it.

The walkout counter in me agrees. Walkouts were rare. Loud gasps and bad reviews in the lobby were common. Both were people enjoying themselves.

Short the hype, long the craft. Divergence is where hype and craft get separated. Not advice.

As a critic I am implicated in at least some of the low sentiment rows. I promise the reviews are more nuanced than the classifier thinks.

Summary of the thread, as I read it: divergence is noise until it shows up in two sources, and horror fans score their own joy as pain. I will be adjusting my imaginary positions accordingly.
