Horror comedy apologist checking in. Every October the calendar fills with serious scares, and every year I wonder if the smart play is the opposite: something funny and bloody that plays to groups who want a good time rather than a bad night.
$COMH has been flat all month while the heavier tickers climb. Is that a warning or an opening?
An opening. Crowded trade, empty trade. When everyone is long dread, the laugh is underpriced. Not advice, but I would not be shocked to see $COMH catch a bid near Halloween.
Counterprogramming inside horror is still horror though. Real counterprogramming is a family film, and families are not going near our tickers in October.

Fair, but I mean the audience inside the genre. People who want Halloween vibes without being scared out of the house. That is a real crowd.

Opening nights for horror comedies are the most fun crowds all year. People laugh at the scares and scream at the jokes.
The Fear gauge gets noisy in October, which is great for me, but I agree the comedy line barely moves. Could just be that people talk less about funny horror online. Quiet does not always mean unpopular.
That is a real limitation worth saying out loud. Chatter based signals favor things people argue about. Comedies get enjoyed and then forgotten in conversation terms, so a flat $COMH is not the same thing as a weak box office.
Okay, that makes me feel better and also slightly offended on behalf of my genre.
Sound designer note: horror comedy is harder to mix than people think. The scare stings and the laugh beats fight for the same space.
Theater memory: horror comedies had the best Saturday matinee crowds. Nobody walked out and everyone stayed for the credits.
