Nordic slow horror: long winters, long films, and $LTRO

  1. NordicNightfallFanOriginal post#1

In Oslo it is already getting dark earlier. This is when I rewatch $LTRO. The snow in that film is almost a character, the silence too.

I think Nordic horror is slow because life here in winter is slow. You wait a lot. You look at things. The horror grows in the waiting. Who else enjoys this pace, and who finds it too cold?

Slow burn defender reporting for duty. The swimming pool scene in Let the Right One In is a masterclass in showing very little and making you feel everything.

This is my home thread now. I light a candle and let the film take its time. Nordic films trust you to sit in a room with them.

Counterpoint, lovingly: some of these are so quiet I fall asleep and then wake up for the one loud scene. Is that intended? It might be intended.

It is a regional tradition. We call it the Scandinavian jump scare: you wake up and someone is already standing there.

Data angle: the Nordic slice on the International page has very clear winter seasonality. Heat rises when daylight falls. I would love a daylight hours overlay, and I am only half joking.

Only half joking, noted. It is on the ideas board next to 'moon phase', which people request more often than you would think.

Small town dread plus snow is my favorite combination. Everyone knows everyone and still nobody talks. Very close to the long books I love.

$LTRO is one of the most stable catalog tickers I watch. It never spikes and it never disappears. Slow money for slow films.

Also a request: can we keep one thread per winter for recommendations? I will start it when the first snow comes. Probably soon, honestly.
