Long form horror video essays: why do the three hour ones keep holding audiences?

Editor brain question. I commission 1,500 word pieces and get told they are too long. Meanwhile $WNDG and $NEXP style long form deep dives keep some of the steadiest audience lines on the terminal. What are multi-hour horror explainers giving people that written criticism is not?

Company on a night shift. I do not watch them, I keep them on. A long horror essay is a coworker who tells you about a cursed shipwreck while you restock shelves.

Same energy as audio horror at 2am. A voice in the dark that knows more than you do.

They are generous with context. A written review has to argue. A deep dive gets to wander, and horror lore is built for wandering.

Big fan of long books, so naturally a big fan of long videos. The format rewards patience, and horror people are patient. We sit through slow burns for fun.

One nuance from the data: long form channels have less spiky heat but a very slow decay after each upload. On CRYPT that looks like a smooth line. Compare $MRBL style storytelling, which tends to spike harder per upload and settle faster.

A long horror essay is a coworker

This is going in my next pitch meeting. 'Commission the coworker.'

As a novelist, this thread is giving me hope. People will absolutely sit with a long story if the voice is good.

The good ones have structure, though. Chapters, a cold open, a callback at the end. The three hour ones that flop are just long, not built.

Long the craft applies here too. The steadiest lines belong to channels that clearly spend months on research.
