    Games & Series· FrameRateFearFan·· post #11

Update: same friends, same ghost, I said the name again. I am no longer allowed near the microphone.

The social horror cluster on CRYPT ($PHSM, $DBDL and friends) behaves more like a hobby than a hit. Steady weekly rhythm, spikes around events and holidays.

There are a few indie woods ones. Bring a map, bring friends, bring snacks, lose two of the three.

Is there one of these for cryptids in the woods? Asking for me, the cryptid person.

It is found footage you can play. Everyone has a camera, everyone films the empty room, somebody sees something. Perfect.

We will invite you. We will not follow you into the basement, but we will invite you.

Hardest mode player: I play with no sanity pills and no lights. My friends no longer invite me. I play alone now. Please send help.

Fear gauge enjoyer here: the $PHSM heat curve is so fun. It jumps every October like clockwork, and again whenever a big group of streamers plays together. Social signal more than news signal.

Talking into the static and waiting for an answer is my favorite part. It is basically a radio drama you perform yourself.

The equipment. Reading thermometer numbers out loud to friends is the most scientific I have ever felt, and the least brave.

Played $PHSM last night with three friends. We narrowed down the ghost type after forever, then one of us said the ghost's name into the microphone by accident and everything went wrong. Best night of…

  12. Long hair ghosts, then and now: is the onryo image still scary?
    International Desk· JHorrorJunFan·· post #11

Conclusion from me: the ghost is not finished. She is only waiting for my cousins to rent a very old apartment.

    International Desk· IndexOfTheDeadInvestor·· post #10

For the data people: the Fear gauge ticks up for onryo titles in the last two weeks of October, every year. Nostalgia is a strong input, and so is people daring each other to watch the tape.

Not a hot take in Japan. That is a normal take.

Hot take: the Grudge sound is scarier than any hair. That croak lives in my walls.

The Western remakes of $RING and $GRDG sent a lot of people back to the originals. Whatever you think of them, they worked as a very long trailer.

    International Desk· SeoulShiverFan·· post #6

In Korea we had our own long hair era around the same time. I think the image traveled so well because it is so simple. White dress, dark hair, a face you cannot see. Your brain does the rest.

This is very true. My cousins can wear the wig but they cannot walk like that. When they try, it becomes a comedy dance.

    International Desk· CreakyFloorboardFan·· post #4

The scary part was never the hair for me. It was the stillness, and then the way she moves wrong. You cannot make a costume of the movement.

Catalog titles are my thing and $RING is a textbook slow money ticker. Small, reliable October bump, almost nothing in summer. It behaves like a seasonal dividend.

It is resting. Every image gets parodied, then a new generation finds the original in the dark at 1am and it works again. I own three copies of the tape and I still do not watch it alone.

Question for the Desk. In Osaka my younger cousins laugh at the long black hair ghost. For them it is a meme, a costume for karaoke night. For me, $RING on VHS was the most scared I have been in my li…
