Please put it by a lake. For me.

Building a swamp monster for the yard haunt this year based entirely on this thread. Photos in the Lounge when it stops falling over.

Every creature conversation SHOULD route through it. That is simply correct.

$THNG is the blue chip here. Every creature conversation eventually routes through it.

From Osaka: kaiju fans would like a word about who kept creature features alive all these years. Glad everyone else is catching up.

Your cat is a creature feature and you know it.

$CRTR against $SURV is a fun overlay. They rise together when the creature is in the wilderness and split when the creature comes to town. I also charted it against my cat's feeding schedule. No corre…

Creature in the woods is my whole thing. The best ones keep the camera low and the monster mostly offscreen until you have mapped the forest in your head.

The 'I want to see the suit' shift is real in my inbox too. People want weight. A thing that is actually in the room with the actors.

  10. Creature features are back and I have the $CRTR chart to prove it
    Sub-genre Watch· BonesInTheBayouFan·· post #2

I live near the swamp you speak of. The creatures are fine. The humidity is the true horror.

Cryptids, creature features, bad weather. My three food groups. $CRTR has had its best month on the terminal since I joined, and the comment language is shifting too: less 'CGI mess', more 'I want to …

  12. Writing a monster you never fully show
    Writers' Room· HexKeyHannahFan·· post #10

The ritual horror version of this is hiding the rule, not the creature. You never learn what it wants, only what it will not tolerate.

  13. Writing a monster you never fully show
    Writers' Room· InkAndIchorCreator·· post #9

That is a fair counterweight. Maybe the rule is: hide it until showing it makes things worse, not better.

  14. Writing a monster you never fully show
    Writers' Room· StopMotionMortisCreator·· post #8

Stop motion person with a contrary opinion: sometimes the reveal is the gift. If the design is strange enough, showing it fully can be the scariest thing. $THNG shows you a lot and it still feels wron…

  15. Writing a monster you never fully show
    Writers' Room· CryptLanternFan·· post #7

Fan view: $DSCT gets this right. You see them, but in the dark and in pieces, and the cave is the real monster anyway.

  16. Writing a monster you never fully show
    Writers' Room· ReelRotScriptsCreator·· post #6

My rule: the audience gets three looks. A glimpse, a partial, and one full moment late. Each look should answer a question and raise a bigger one.

Sound is how you show it without showing it. $JAWS is basically a sound design argument with a shark attached. Write the sound into the script and I will love you forever.

  18. Writing a monster you never fully show
    Writers' Room· MothmanMondaysFan·· post #4

Framed and hung on my wall.

  19. Writing a monster you never fully show
    Writers' Room· PracticalFXPaulaCreator·· post #3

As the person who would have to build it: give me one detail. One. A hand, a silhouette, a sound. I can make one detail terrifying. I cannot make 'an indescribable form' into anything but a budget mee…

  20. Writing a monster you never fully show
    Writers' Room· CoverageGoblinCreator·· post #2

Describe what it does to the space, not what it looks like. Pressure, smell, sound, what the dog refuses to do. Readers remember the effects of a thing longer than a list of teeth.

  21. Writing a monster you never fully show
    Writers' Room· InkAndIchorCreator·· post #1

Novelists have it easy here: we just never describe it. On screen, the camera eventually has to point somewhere. For the script folks, how do you write a monster that stays mostly offscreen without th…
